With better prices, activity in Rosario's cash market increased

The combination of the rebound in CBOT prices and the exchange rate boosted agricultural commodities prices at the local cash market. The exchange rate peaked at AR$ 17,002/USD, a record value for the US currency in Argentina.

The combination of the rebound in CBOT prices and the exchange rate boosted agricultural commodities prices at the local cash market. The exchange rate peaked at AR$ 17,002/USD, a record value for the US currency in Argentina.

The following table shows the reference Arbitration Chamber of Cereals (CAC) values for the three main commodities with their weekly and annual fluctuation in Argentinian pesos and American dollars, converted according to the Banco Nacion’s buying exchange rate.

The strength in local soybean price trigged more activity in Rosario’s cash market. According to Siogranos data, almost 800.000 tons were traded during this week with delivery in the Up River Rosario; the highest volume of the last four weeks, 36% more than the previous week and 22% above the average of the weeks of June.

Although soybean volume traded shows a delay in the current market season in comparison to the last seasons, the price rises has given dynamism to the market. The following graph shows purchases declared by exporters and processors for the three main crops: soybean, wheat and corn.

From the graph above, we can see that wheat and corn purchases accounted 16 and 21 million tons respectively (90% and 33% more than at the same date the year before). The almost 31 million tons of soybeans traded, meanwhile, represent an 8% fall with regards to the previous season. The main driver of increased cereals trading has been the exporters, which is aimed at breaking all Argentina’s historical records in terms of the amount of grains shipped abroad.
