In Argentina, the railway freight reached 10.63 million tons during the first seven months of 2017, which represented an increase of 0.2% against the same period of the previous year. There was a very uneven activity among the different railway operators. While two of the main lines, that is to say NCA and FerroExpreso Pampeano, showed a joint fall of 6%, the Ferrosur Roca line and the Belgrano -the latter belonging to Trenes Argentinos Cargas y Logística, which is a state company- registered growths of 11% and 26%, respectively. NCA and FEPSA lines also registered a fall in the tonnage per kilometer freight, while Ferrosur Roca increased 6% the volume per kilometer y/y.
The freight transported by rail in the first seven months of 2017 increased slightly compared to the same period in 2016, reaching almost 10.63 million tons, or 0.2%. There was an uneven performance among the railway operators. The tonnage of merchandise transported by the NCA (Nuevo Central Argentino) AND Ferroexpreso Pampeano receded 3% and 11%, respectively. The fall was offset by the increase of 11% in the Ferrosur Roca freight and 26.5% in the Belgrano line.
According to the information provided by Ferrocamara (association of railways companies), the total freight carried by rail in Argentina during the first seven month of 2017 has not experienced outstanding changes as regard the same period in 2016.
The situation varies among the different operators. FerroExpreso Pampeano SA and Nuevo Central Argentino SA had a decrease in the tonnes transported in comparison with the same period of the previous year: 1.4% and 3%, respectively. The freight of Ferrosur Roca SA increased 11.2%. The freight of the lines under the management of Belgrano Cargas and Logística SA, Urquiza and Belgrano, increased 29.4% and 26.5%, respectively, although the San Martin line loaded slightly below last year period; that is to say, 0.7%.
Both the evolution of the transported rail freight, expressed in tons, during the first seven month of 2017 and the same period of 2016, as the percentage variation by line or company could be seen in Table 1.
For all the railway lines, there was not a significant variation in the tonnage transported by kilometer in aggregate terms, since there was a decrease of 3% in the whole system. There was indeed a pronounced difference between rail companies or railway lines. This could be appreciated in Table 2.
FerroExpreso Pampeano SA y Nuevo Central Argentino SA lines registered drops of 13% and 8%, respectively, in their freight per kilometer, while Ferrosur Roca SA increased 6%.
All the lines under the management of Belgrano Cargas y Logística SA (state owned company) displayed rises of 8% and 38% in the tonne per kilometer freight, belonging to San Martín and Urquiza lines, while the Belgrano line registered a 3% fall.
In Table 4, the evolution of the total railway freight detailed by operator or line can be analyzed for the first seven month of the last three years.
If we take into account the first seven month months of 2015 as a base equal to 100, the total transported freight by the railway loading system (SFC) in 2017 was 101, which means that there was 1% more of transported merchandise during the first seven month of 2017 than in 2015. There is different performance between operators, being the Belgrano line the one that had the highest growth of the system. The evolution of the transported tonnage detailed by rail line or company can be appreciated in Table 5.
